Governance
The legislation which regulates the governance of the University is the Higher Education Act and the University’s Statute. The Higher Education Act provides for the establishment of a Council, Senate, Student Representative Council and University Forum among other offices and structures, in all public higher education institutions. These are institutional governance structures with distinctive roles.
Council
The University's highest governing body. Council governs the Institution subject to the Higher Education Act and the institutional statutes.
Senate
Senate is accountable to Council with regard to the academic and research functions of the institution.
Convocation
Elects the University Chancellor, President of Convocation and 10 members of its own Exco.
University Forum
The Forum advises Council on all issues affecting the institution, including those listed in the Act.
Student Representative Council (SRC)
The SRC represents Wits students in all aspects of their student life.
Office Bearers and Eminent Persons
These include the distinguished personnel in positions of authority in the University.
Administration
The Office of the University Registrar is the custodian of the University's governance activities and, through delegated authority to the Secretariat, is mandated with the accountability for the governance of the University. The Secretariat ensures policy administration and secretariat administration to the governance structures.
Secretariat
The Secretariat provides secretariat services to the major management structures of the University and maintains the Wits Governance Portal.
Regulatory reporting
Monitoring and reporting of institutional performance based on the strategic imperatives of the University.
University Policies
Policies and guidelines approved by Senate and Council.
