Urban ecology

Our urban ecology research explores how social-ecological systems function and respond within rapidly transforming urban environments, with a primary focus on Gauteng Province and the greater Johannesburg area. We investigate ecological patterns and processes in urban and peri-urban areas, particularly the role of green infrastructure and ecological corridors in supporting biodiversity and ecosystem services. Recent projects include studies on otter ecology in greater Johannesburg, identification of ecological corridors and their conservation value, and urban residents’ perceptions of and interactions with wildlife. Ongoing work also assesses the challenges and opportunities linked to biodiversity stewardship programmes in Gauteng.

Sustainability research

Our sustainability research centres on transitions toward resilient urban futures. Building on years of experience working with businesses and communities, we are increasingly focused on how deeply held beliefs, value systems, and cultural contexts influence progress toward sustainability. This includes engaging with perspectives on climate change and exploring the effectiveness of environmental policies and guidelines in South Africa. Through this work, we aim to support more environmentally sustainable transformations.
