Overview

Welcome to the Department of Internal Medicine under the School of Clinical Medicine

Internal medicine is a medical specialty focused on preventing, diagnosing, and treating adult diseases. Physicians who specialize in internal medicine. They are trained to manage a wide range of conditions that affect the internal organs, such as the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal system, dermatology system, hematology system, Rheumatology system, and endocrine system.

Our Department houses the GEMP III and IV programs in Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic, Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic, Helen Joseph, and Kleksdrop Hospital.

Professor Ismail Kalla: Academic Head of the Department of Internal Medicine

Prof. Kalla is an Academic Head of the Department of Internal Medicine and an Associate Professor in the Divisions of Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine. Completed a PhD in 2017 and currently serves as a principal investigator in clinical research across Internal Medicine, Pulmonology, and Critical Care Medicine. Holds key academic leadership roles, including Chair of the Undergraduate Teaching Portfolio and Chair of the Supernumerary Portfolio within the Postgraduate Committee for Internal Medicine.
