Anthropology

The PhD is a degree that takes a minimum of 2 years full-time or a maximum of 4 years part-time and is offered across all schools in the Faculty.

Entry Requirements


a) Documentation to show that the applicant has minimum aggregate mark of 70% in the Master's degree (NQF level 9 or if international degree the equivalent thereof). A mark of 70% for the Masters research component is required in order to be considered for admission into the PhD program. Applicants with a mark between 65 - 69% for the Master’s research component will need to provide a motivation and evidence of additional scholarly outputs, for example, peer-reviewed journal articles or equivalent, along with the concept paper in order to be considered.

b) The applicant’s MA research report/thesis

c) A 5-page Concept Paper which will be circulated among and evaluated by all staff. Applicants are encouraged to align their Concept Paper with those of a prospective supervisor for the proposed project. For information on staff research interests, please visit their individual research profiles Here. The concept paper needs to include the following:

  • Abstract (with at least 5 key words)
  • Working title of project
  • Background to the study
  • Aims and Objectives of project
  • Rationale for the study
  • Site of the study
  • Methods to be employed
  • Why these methods? How will methods be executed in practice?
  • Ethical issues
  • Literature related to project
  • Disclosure of sources of funding held for the studies or ideas the applicant has of any possible sources

d) A short CV which discloses to the Department the applicant’s other commitments (other jobs and employment) besides doctoral studies (if any).

There are no set-deadlines for PhD applications. PhD admissions are made at various times of the academic year.  Meeting the minimum requirement for the MA degree does not guarantee acceptance into our doctoral programme. A supervisor from the Department of Anthropology must be identified and approached prior to application.

  • Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications via the Self Service Portal.
  • Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
