WHO appointment to develop guidelines on AI in pharmaceutical manufacturing

Wits Advanced Drug Delivery Platform Director, Professor Yahya Choonara, appointed to expert committee.
The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) nominated Professor Yahya Choonara, Director of the WADDP, to participate in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Expert Committee on Specifications for Pharmaceutical Preparations.
This high-level platform shapes technical guidance for medicine production and quality assurance worldwide.
Choonara will serve as an expert on the AI-focused working group, from 2025 through 2027.
His nomination was based on work he did for the FIP’s Industrial Pharmacy Section.
The appointment affirms Choonara’s leadership in pharmaceutical innovation and his internationally recognised contributions to the field of pharmaceutical manufacturing, drug delivery, and regulatory science.
“The integration of AI in pharmaceutical systems is a transformative global priority poised to significantly impact the industry's future by addressing challenges and unlocking new opportunities to enhance efficiency and productivity, improve quality control, and accelerate innovation” says Choonara.
His appointment underscores the growing global impact of South African pharmaceutical science and Wits’ leadership in shaping the future of medicine innovation and policy.
