Parents welcomed to Wits as partners in student success

Wits University hosted over a thousand parents and learners for its second annual Parents’ Day
Held across the Braamfontein and Health Sciences campuses, the event offered a glimpse into university life and academic opportunities. The initiative, led by the Student Liaison Office, aims to bridge the gap between families and the university, fostering a sense of shared responsibility in shaping students’ futures.
“Today, we just wanted to host our parents, show them a little bit of appreciation, and also give them an understanding of what Wits University is all about,” said Student Recruitment Officer Zodwa Ndebele. “Once students enter Wits, they pass the baton to us. It’s our role to guide them further and prepare them for their industries.”
Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Wits, Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, delivered the keynote address, reinforcing the University’s commitment to excellence. “For parents who will be first-time Wits parents, congratulations on taking this major step forward in exposing your child to what is world-class education,” he said.
Acknowledging the University’s rigorous standards, he added: “It’s very tough to get a Wits degree. It’s not easy to get in, and it’s hard to get out with a degree.” He urged students to pursue their ambitions with humility. “Reach for the stars but remain grounded and have humility; humility with resilience will open up a universe of infinite possibilities for you.”
Parents engaged with academic staff from all five faculties, ranging from medicine and law to Digital Arts and astrophysics, as they explored study options and career pathways alongside their children.
“Before coming here, I was confused about what I wanted to study,” said Keven Marambakuiana, a Grade 12 learner from Curro New Road School. “They explained things so well and elaborated it perfectly enough for me to understand.”
First-time visitor Janine Lamprecht said she was happy to be at Wits with her daughter, Janique Lamprecht, a grade 11 learner from Marist Brothers Linmeyer. “It was well organised and informative. I would love for my daughter to study here next year.”
The day reinforced Wits’ mission to develop not just graduates, but leaders, anchored in excellence, resilience, and purpose.
